Komondor Club
Preserving the history and true character of the Hungarian Komondor
— a bold, devoted, independent, and self-sufficient guard dog.
Who We Are Today
For decades, M.A.S.K.C. operated as a highly active regional club. Today we have transitioned from a “live” operating club into a dedicated digital archive and educational trust, continuing to serve as a resource, a point of communication, and a faithful guardian of the breed’s history.
Maintain the Archives
Our archives are the most extensive source of Komondor knowledge in English. We preserve A.K.C. Stud Registers, OFA health records, show and obedience records, and original translations of Hungarian cynologists so the breed’s history stays accessible worldwide.
Educate Prospective Owners
The Komondor is “not a dog for everyone.” We educate the public about the breed’s size, the demanding care its corded coat requires, and its independent, protective nature so buyers understand the commitment before bringing one home.
Provide Support
Our members answer questions and offer practical guidance on coat care, training, diet, and health. We share breed-specific alerts—anesthesia sensitivity, bloat risks, and the importance of early socialization—drawn from decades of “Ask M.A.S.K.C.” experience.
Advocate Ethical Ownership
Since 1973, we have encouraged the public to seek reputable breeders and vehemently opposed the sale of Komondor puppies to pet stores or puppy mills. We believe that show stock, breeding stock, and working stock must be the same, and we support health screenings such as OFA hip and CERF eye certifications to eliminate hereditary defects.
Foster the Komondor Community
Since 1974, the M.A.S.K.C. Komondor News was the lifeblood of a worldwide network of owners, sharing advice, welfare alerts, and stories. The club encouraged open exchange of ideas and was an early adopter of online communication — the same spirit of camaraderie that continues today.
Promote the True Character of the Breed
The Komondor is an independent, self-reliant guardian — devoted to its family and suspicious of strangers. Its corded coat, muscular frame, and dignified bearing reflect a heritage of protecting flocks alone on the Hungarian plains. M.A.S.K.C. has always held that show, breeding, and working stock must be the same.
Our Core Purpose
To preserve the history and true character of the Hungarian Komondor — a bold, devoted, independent, and self-sufficient guard dog, complete with its characteristic imposing strength, unusual and serviceable corded coat, and its general soundness and dignified bearing.
